MULTIPLE PHOTOS/SEQUENCE

Interplay is the key to multiple picture usage. When one picture can do the job, no competent editor would use two. But when one picture complements the other, a new rule applies.

Just as the whole can be greater than the sum of the parts, successfully paired pictures will reveal much more than either of them would alone. Pairing may show contrast, change over time, size comparison or many other things. Sometimes a sequence tells the story.

THE PHOTO STORY

More sophisticated than the multiple picture or sequence is the photo story and the photo essay. The photo story has visual continuity and is narrative in nature.

A picture group is a series of miscellaneous photos on a single subject. Precision in terms is important in visual journalism.

THE PHOTO ESSAY

The photo essay sets out to prove a point or explore a problem or issue.

VOICE OVER NARRATION AND NATURAL SOUND

With the advent of the Internet, a new dimension as been added to visual communication – sound. It may be voice over narration by the photojournalist or a reporter. It may be the voice of the subject telling the story in his or her own words. It may include natural sound as well.
