GoldenGateXpress: Debate for Golden Gate Bridge suicide barrier continues

The iconic Golden Gate Bridge is traversed by millions of people a day. It serves as a tourist destination for many and a muse for some. But for others, the bridge serves a deeper, darker purpose. For more than 25 people every year, the bridge becomes a shining red beacon of freedom from every possible difficulty in life; over the years nearly 2,000 people have committed suicide. The numbers have sparked the consideration of a preventative barrier, but arguments remain around the cost, effectiveness and aesthetic appeal of such an implementation.

In April of 2010, backpacker JD Rayson embarked on a six-month-long journey from Georgia to Maine on foot. After his 2,180 mile-long trek across 14 states, the avid backpacker looks back on his hiking of the Appalachian Trail and how it led his interest in the outdoors into becoming an obsession.
