It’s been a busy week here in East Tennessee.

James Callan: Cleansed by Fire

One of the independent authors I work with, James Callan, has made an offer especially for those (such as you) on my email list. He’s offering a free copy of his mystery Cleansed by Fire to those who will email him with “Fire” in the subject like. He’ll send along a free .mobi, .epub, or PDF file of his book. Here’s the address:

It’s a cozy mystery and has 91 reviews with an average rating of 4.6 stars. More about the book is below the signature line of this email.

The promotion days for these giveaways have passed, but the giveaway pages and many of the books are still available.

The Prolific Reader Mystery giveaway. This is a terrific giveaway with lots of books in lots of different genres — all free, of course. Here’s the link to the mystery section: .

Lose Yourself in Free BooksThis giveaway involved more than 230 books in 13 genres from some of today’s hottest authors, all free.

Thristery. Another good one. Lots of books, lots of authors.

The Great American Eclipse

Folks in my part of the United States are getting eclipse fever. We’re in the path of the eclipse, and about 30 miles south of us, in the small town of Sweetwater, is where you can view the eclipse in its totality. If you are satisfied just to read about it, my friend and colleague Mark Littmann has co-authored one of the best books you will find on the subject.

Totality: The Great American Eclipses of 2017 and 2024 by Mark Littmann and Fred Espenak

The Writing Wright (volume 1)

As promised, The Writing Wright (volume 1) is now available on Amazon. But DO NOT pay $1.99 (or $6.99, unless you want a print copy). Instead, download it free from this email with the link below.

The Writing Wright (volume 1) is an eclectic mix of ideas, information, quotations, instruction, wisdom, and stories about writing and the writing life. It’s also forum to impose some of my pen-and-ink and watercolor renderings on unsuspecting readers.

Forward this email to a friend

The pot for the forwarding contest just got sweeter. There are now four (count ’em, 4) pens that will be given away. The one on the right, the latest addition, is made of red oak.

At the end of August, I will give away these hand-turned, wooden pens to four people who participate in this contest. You can forward each of my Friday newsletters to as many of your friends as you want (and be sure to include my email in the forwarding so I can have a record of it). The more times you forward these emails, the more chances you have to win a pen.

More information about the contest is here:

Cleansed by Fire: A Father Frank Mystery by James R. Callan

Churches are burning and a man is murdered. Father Frank DeLuca is thrust into an impossible dilemma when he learns another church will be burned. But the information comes to him via the confessional, and church law forbids him telling anyone—even the police.

He doesn’t know which church, when, or by whom. Still, he can’t sit idly by, and no law prevents him looking into the matter himself.

Countering this are a young widow whose mission is to make others shine, and her romantic feelings for the detective who’s working the arsons. Plus, a youth choir is determined to help those whose churches have been destroyed by the arsonist.

His investigation leads him dangerously close to the local drug scene and he soon discovers the danger has come to him. Can he save his own church? Can he save his own life?
