JN-21.com launched to help journalism teachers, students

JN-21.com is here.

This site, a part of the Intercollegiate Online News Network (ICONN) and its subsidiary, the Interscholastic Online News Network (ISONN, is devoted to building a new journalism curriculum that breaks the bonds of print and broadcast media and emphasizes online media and the convergent aspects of 21st century journalism.

Our goal is to help teachers teach — and students learn — the basics of good journalism in a converged media environment.

Good journalism means accuracy, clarity, precision and efficiency. It means telling people stories that are interesting and giving people information that is significant — information that will help them understand their world. Journalists have a high social calling, and we intend to honor that calling with proper attention to the traditional values of journalism but with a deep understanding of how today’s technology has changed the process and outcome of journalism.

But this site doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and it’s not just another teaching site.

It is part of the Intercollegiate Online News Network, which seeks to accomplish the following:

changing the focus of journalism education on both the collegiate and scholastic levels by encouraging the creation of campus news websites;– setting up a network that  includes new sites as well as those already established by campus newspapers;

— creating a centralized site that can house all of the content of all of the member sites;

— creating a news service to feed content from member sites out to all sites;

— building a network is a powerful news operation that includes an audio and video operation;

— that such a network could be a powerful advertising tool.

These are, admittedly, ambitious goals. They won’t be accomplished easily or quickly. But we believe they are worth our efforts. Join the work by emailing Jim Stovall, jgstovall@gmail.com.
