GOING ONLINE

Digital Journalism for Today's High Schools

A workshop for high school teachers
Monday, June 14, 2010
School of Journalism and Electronic Media
University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Workshop website: http://jprof.com/iconn/events/goingonline10.html

WHAT

This one-day workshop will give high school teachers and newspaper advisers the information and tools they need to establish online news web sites. It will also introduce a newly evolving online journalism curriculum for high schools and the concept of the Interscholastic Online News Network (ISONN).

Tentative lineup of topics:

Doing web journalism

Basics. The basics of journalism - reporting, writing, editing - don't change for any medium but the forms are different. Learn those differences and what you should be teaching your students.

Writing. A new form of writing is emerging for the web. More than ever, journalists must learn to "say it and get out." We'll show you the basics of the Nutshell structure that takes you beyond the Inverted Pyramid.

Multimedia. On the web, journalists can use text, pictures, audio and video. We'll give you a rundown of the skills that you should be teaching your students and the resources to do it.
Going online
To take your website online, you need hree things: a content management system, server space, and maintenance. This workshop will show you how it's done - and we'll make sure it's done before you leave the building.

One of the things we will be offering to workshop participants is the Ochs content management system. (And it's free.)
