Test 1: Critique a news web site
Select a professionally produced news web site (not TNJN) and write a critique.
Items and questions to consider in your critique:
- Describe the structure of the site. What do you see on the home page? How do you navigate the site? Is searching the site difficult?
- Consider the characteristics of the web (as listed in chapter 1 of Web Journalism). How does this site take advantage of those characteristics? Where does it fall short?
- Writing. Given what we have read and discussed so far in this course, how does the writing on this site measure up. Does the writing exhibit the characteristics of good web writing?
- Linking. How does the site handle links? Again, consider what we have learned in this course.
- Reader services. What reader services does the site offer – email alerts, personalization, ability to post comments, RSS feeds, uploads to social networking sites, etc. Does the site require registration?
- Improvements. Based on what you know now, what changes or improvements should the site consider?
Remember that tight, concise writing is paramount in your answers. Go for facts. Opinions without examples are not much use to us.
Finally, you should post your critique on the TNJN server, and you may include any pictures, illustrations, sidebar, audio, video or any other material that you choose.
