This web site is the home for a number of active courses, particularly those taught by Jim Stovall at the University of Tennessee. Most of the courses listed here uses one of the textbooks found on the home page of this site. Visitors to the site are welcome to view any of the course material available here.![]() The exercise room JPROF.com contains a number of exercises that will help students learn how to use commas, recognize grammar problems, understand HTML for building web pages, learn dates important in the editing process, and a number of other skills. They are conveniently located in our exercise room, hosted by Annie, the Grammar Queen (right). Take a look and see what you can use. University of Tennessee JEM200 Introduction to News Writing. This is the beginning news writing course at UT. The course introduces student to aspect of news writing and other concept of professionla media writing. JEM422 Managing News Web Sites. The web journalism concepts of lateral reporting, backpack journalism and web packages are covered in this course. Students will learn that managing a news web site means presenting information in a variety of ways appropriate to the information itself. They will also learn some of the basic concept of creating and organizating a web site. The course uses the college's news web site as its chief teaching tool.. Emory & Henry College Communications 101 Mass Media and Society. This course introduces students to the structure and function of the mass media in the United States, with special attention given to news and information. It is designed to introduce mass communication majors to the field and various media industries, and it will help all students become more informed and discerning media consumers. ![]() Communications 201 Writing for the Media. This Emory and Henry College course introduces students to the concept, conventions and forms of media writing. News and the inverted pyramid news story structure are emphasized in this course. The course uses Writing for the Mass Media as its main text. Communication 302 Editing the Written Word. This Emory and Henry College course provides students with the concepts and demands of editing in a professional setting. Students are required to learn the skills of an editor and apply them with practical exercises. The course uses The Complete Editor as its main text. Communication 424 Web Journalism. This Emory and Henry College course gives students the opportunity to explore problems and issues related to the practice of journalism on the news media: the World Wide Web. The course uses Web Journalism: Practice and Promise of a New Medium as its text. University of Alabama ![]() Journalism 100 Introduction to Journalism. This introductory course is taught by Dr. George Daniels at the University of Alabama. The course provides students with an introduction to the concepts and issues basic to the field of journalism. It uses Journalism: Who, What, When, Where, Why and How as its main text. JN430 New Media Workshop. This University of Alabama course provides exploration, practice and application of media convergence in a newsroom environment. The class combines reporting, editing, design, photography, multimedia, promotion and advertising to maintain the young adult web magazine Dateline Alabama. The course is taught by Dr. Ed Mullins and uses Web Journalism: Practice and Promise of a New Medium as its text. MC102 Introduction to Media Writing. This is a course that I taught for many years at the University of Alabama before I left there in 2003. The course was required for all mass communication majors and used Writing for the Mass Media as a text. |
